Teams vs. Workgroups
I read on Leader to Leader that most “teams” are not actually teams but working groups. The article is spot on - most groups that call themselves teams are actually autonomous working groups.
It’s easy for me to see why a quality organization could so easily function this way: competent people want to make sure things get done right. And if you want something done right…
A team, on the other hand, requires trust. You have to trust your teammates to do their part. And the article elaborates on how trust is the foundation for the rest of the things a group must do in order to become a team.
Specifically, the author (Patrick M. Lencioni) calls for “vulnerability-based trust.” And what he describes should be something relatively “easy” for a group of Christians (that’s who I’m working with) to do. Right? But it’s not. (Actually, I do know of a few outstanding exceptions.)
I think the general state of affairs, though, is really too bad. Christians could really lead out in this area, but we are too often defeated by the same pressures of success, image, and being “good” that cripple everyone else.
Who in this world, these days, really dares to be themselves?
