Thoughts on “Blue Like Jazz”

Don’t read it…

Some people don’t really care about spirituality or love or living a fulfilling life or poetry or jazz music. Those people shouldn’t read this book. They’ll probably think it’s boring. Which is too bad because I think poetry and jazz music are really enjoyable things.

Read it…

I think a lot of non-Christians should read this book - especially the ones that care about love and spirituality. This may help them understand Christ’s followers a little bit better.

“…by being true I am allowing people to get to know the real me, and it feels better to have people love the real me than the me I invented.”
Donald Miller

My friend Shelly is a beautiful hippie feminist. (And by beautiful I describe her soul and being as much as anything else.) She practices her own religion, cares about racism and poverty, and is one of the most loving and affirming people I know. More than most Christians, even.

I think she would agree with a lot that is written in the book - Don’s ideas about loving and receiving love are exactly what her faith life are all about. I’d want her to read this book.

She might not like certain parts in it, but she’d tell me about it and we could have a great discussion. And she’d know that other people who love Jesus want to love her, just as she is, too. They’re not all about judging. And sometimes they have a hard time getting their act together. I’d want to her to know that about people who love Jesus.

For Christians?

I think it would be nice if Christians read this book too. I think it would be even nicer if, after reading it, they put it down and started to let their own life be played into the texture of music that surrounds a real relationship with the greatest Artist of all time.

[...] Posted by germanhokie on January 11, 2008 My parents gave me this book for christmas…but only because i asked for it. i don’t think they woulda got it for me any other way. i’m already readin it for the 2nd time and i love it! it’s an easy book to follow, it kept my attention the whole way through. The style of writing is more laid back and not so…shall i say discriminating as other books on the same thing. it is simply the author telling his story in a very realistic, down-to-earth way, friendly to everyone. he’s not trying to push his ideas on you, he just tells you how he sees things and gives logical and valid reasons why he sees things that way. he tells mainly from personal experience. below there is a link to show you what others think about this amazing book. http://www.nosq.com/blog/2005/03/thoughts-on-blue-like-jazz/ [...]
