Women Leading Men in Prayer in Islam

Fascinating. My heart goes out in support of Ms. Asra Nomani and the others who are taking bold steps to lead men in prayer in the Islamic faith.

That takes a lot of courage when your upbringing, your peers, and religious elders are all telling you “don’t do this - it is wrong.” It is a risky, scary, and difficult place for a woman to be in.

Interestingly enough, parts of their struggle reflect similar debates within the Christian faith.

But a few scholars and women’s groups argue [women not being allowed to lead men in prayer] is not that definitive, pointing to a situation in which the prophet Muhammad designated a woman to lead prayer for a group including men.

People will interpret their religious books to support their own views. Some point to places in the bible where Paul had women in ministry leadership… and each of those places is hotly contested (or ignored).

It is a thin and sometimes hazy line between “obedience to god” and “using religion to maintain the status quo and your position of power.” History has shown us that Christianity has struggled to really find that line. I hope my Islamic friends find and maintain the diginity and equality I believe God has given to all human beings.

No status quo. I’m open to things being challenged.
